June 2009 LOG-BOOK: News about the Mexican Flu and about Greece are nót present this month, because we had enough to write about the L.W.H. June 1st: the old Long-eared Owl was 273 (+1), the young one 299 (-5) and the old Dark Barn Owl was 272 (+3) gram. The Goshawk was 732 (-17, the Kestrel 182 (+1) and the Eleonora was 389 (-5) gram. The scalped Pigeon was 257 (+8) and the other 197 (-9) gram. The juvenile Hooded Crow was 289 (+9) gram. Tortoises: competitors number 0901 was 29 (-1), -0902 was 17 (-1), -0903 was 27 (+3), -0904 was 33 (=) and 0905 was 28 (+1) gram. Juvenile Barn Owls: doubleorange was 415 (+21), green 389 (-3), red 361 (-1), orange 371 (+12), purple 323 (+11), blue 273 (-2) and yellow 157 (+5) gram. The other patients nothing special to report. At 7.40 a.m. we have transferred the Goshawk (08-169; September 4th 08) to the buzzard-aviary > further we cant do anything anymore for him and either he will make it or he wont make it !! The amputation-injury of the Greylag Goose isnt smelling at all so badly !! Today we had to amputate the right wing of the Eleonoras Falcon > couldnt be saved and was worsening day after day. Today meat had to be processed again and Ineke & Joren, together with Tjarda, have let pass their hands and knives 15,740 kilo (for 97,60 Euro; total now this year 338,735 kilo for 2122,85 Euro). Release: at 11.35 a.m. we have released in the Tsianás-river the one-eyed adult Yellow-legged Gull (09-066; May 29th 09). This one was fed well and should try to survive with the handicap. We couldnt do anything more for him. He started at once drinking and walking around; once the wings were spread. At (almost) the beginning of the siesta still 2 Dutch visitors. At 5.15 p.m. our Marginated Tortoise Granny was seen during the laying of eggs: quite a difficult face and this time (see as well May 8th 09) in a self digged hole. Both Long-eared Owls are now lodged in The Keep and wont be measured anymore. June 2nd: the old Dark Barn Owl was 273 (+1), the Kestrel was 184 (+2) and the Eleonora (so after the amputation) 348 gram. The juvenile Pigeon with the digestion-problems was 209 (+12) gram and the juvenile Hooded Crow 285 (-4) gram. Tortoises: competitors number 0901 was 29 (=), -0902 was 17 (=), -0903 was 27 (=), -0904 was 32 (-1) and 0905 was 28 (=) gram. Juvenile Barn Owls: doubleorange was 416 (+1), green 388 (-1), red 381 (+20), orange 380 (+9), purple 333 (+10), blue 284 (+11) and yellow 162 (+5) gram. The other patients nothing special to report. At 11.27 a.m. a phone-call via Myrsíni Tourvalí that with the 1.15-oclock-coach a little bird will be sent; unknown what kind of. At 12.27 p.m. another phone-call; this time from Krátigos, that those people wanted to send with the 1.15-oclock-coach two young sparrows. And those we had in our hands at 1.53 p.m. > see further at HOUSE SPARROW. The unknown birdie from Mytiléne we had at 2 p.m. and this showed to be a juvenile GREAT TIT > see over there. After the siesta still 4 Dutch visitors. June 3rd: all patients in the Sick-Bay were wonder of wonders still alive early this morning !! As well all six outdoor-cats were present for their breakfast. The old Dark Barn Owl was 280 (+7), the Kestrel was 186 (+2) and the Eleonora 354 (+6) gram. The juvenile Pigeon was 214 (+5) gram and the juvenile Hooded Crow 300 (+16) gram. Tortoises: competitors number 0901 was 31 (+2), -0902 was 18 (+1), -0903 was 29 (+2), -0904 was 33 (+1) and 0905 was 28 (=) gram. Juvenile Barn Owls: doubleorange was 439 (+23), green 394 (+13), red 394 (+13), orange 382 (+2), purple 345 (+12), blue 287 (+3) and yellow 168 (+6) gram. Nothing special to report about the juvenile Sparrows and the Great Tit. Removing the food-bowls from the nocturnals in The Keep we have discovered that in the little-owl-aviary one female is sitting glued on warm eggs !! The amputation-injury of the Eleonora is nicely dry and isnt smelling at all !! This cant be said from the Greylag Goose, where there is quite a huge gangrene: we have started with Dermisol-solvens supported by antibiotics (Baytril). However, she is doing quite well and is the whole day out in our courtyard; sometimes (under guidance) as well in the street. We started removing the four eldest juvenile Dark Barn Owls from the small patient-cages and lodging them in the much bigger cage where as well the old Dark Barn Owl is lodged. This makes quite a difference in the amount of produced manure in a small place and (what is even more important) the stamping here through by those birds with all consequences for their feathers. June 4th: this night at 0.30 a.m. we received an e-mail that late last night in the Salines was found an orphaned young Moorhen; is ± 2 5 days old. One will try first to place the chicken with other ones of his kind (if they are present), but when they dont succeed the little one will be brought here. All outdoor-cats were again present this morning. Entering the Sick-Bay we discovered the juvenile Great Tit succumbing on his side, but as well the whole drum with pre-mixed food for the Cacatua thrown down and open on the floor and the kittens had been playing in all the seeds and peanuts !! The old Dark Barn Owl was 276 (-4), the Kestrel was 186 (=) and the Eleonora 359 (+5) gram. The Pigeon was 219 (+5) gram and the Hooded Crow 304 (+4) gram. Tortoises: competitors number 0901 was 30 (-1), -0902 was 18 (=), -0903 was 29 (=), -0904 was 34 (+1) and 0905 was 28 (=) gram. Juvenile Barn Owls: doubleorange was 446 (+7), green 402 (+8), red 415 (+21), orange 405 (+23), purple 364 (+19), blue 305 (+18) and yellow 168 (=) gram. The last one well feed extra today. With the Sparrows all is going fine. The juvenile Great Tit wasnt alive anymore at 7.25 a.m. > showed having an immense swelling next to the left eye. So after all indeed cerebral ?? At 7.57 a.m. a phone-call from the Town Hall in Kallonís that they had there a little Koukouvágia, discovered in the streets in Mytiléne. Because our car was in the neighborhood, we had the birdie in our possession at 8.16 a.m. > see further at LITTLE OWL. The eldest three Sparrows (09-046, redsilver; 09-055 orange and 09-059, doublegreen) transferred to the Aviary for practicing. There are lots of maggots in the wing-limb of the Greylag Goose > they can help removing all the dead tissue. But of course well let this happen controlled. During a heavy thunderstorm there was a complete black-out at 10.05 a.m. for the whole island which lasted until 11.15 a.m. We received two visitors who were living in Belgium. At 12.05 p.m. arrived the announced little MOORHEN > see over there. The whole group from the University of the Aegean (they brought the little one) was shown around. At 2.50 p.m. two well-known to us people were in our court-yard with two total drowned chickens from a BUZZARD > see over there. June 5th: it was extra-early this morning because trainee Joren left after a very good trainee-ship back to Holland. At 5.25 a.m. the red juvenile Buzzard was discovered not alive anymore !! The new juvenile Little Owl was 155 (+4), the old Dark Barn Owl was 281 (+5), the Kestrel was 186 (=) and the Eleonora 363 (+4) gram. The purple juvenile Buzzard was 722 (-28) gram. The Pigeon was 222 (+3) gram and the Hooded Crow 305 (+1) gram. The baby Moorhen was 38 (+3) gram. Tortoises: competitors number 0901 was 33 (+3), -0902 was 18 (=), -0903 was 29 (=), -0904 was 33 (-1) and 0905 was 30 (+2) gram. Juvenile Barn Owls: doubleorange was 457 (+11), green 413 (+11), red 410 (-5), orange 417 (+12), purple 376 (+12), blue 312 (+7) and yellow 179 (+11) gram. The other patients nothing special to report. The amputation-injury of the Eleonora is still well dry and the same injury of the Greylag Goose is starting to be more dry > hardly any maggots could be detected. Two of the three juvenile Sparrows, yesterday transferred to the Aviary, are spotted meanwhile while they were eating: greengreen and orange. Inspecting the body of the succumbed Buzzard some things were remarkable: there were immense injuries in the breast and belly (covered with maggots), which wasnt detected due to the condition of the feathers yesterday, and as well that there was a deformation of the legs (both); something the other one seems to have problems with as well. So strictly speaking nest-misfits which are thrown out of the nest by the parents ?? Around 10.30 a.m. all three juvenile Sparrows were spotted in the Aviary: they were sitting in the sun cleaning their feathers. Indeed its quite strange doing all the work only with two people, but till now on we could manage !! We were called from Athens by Joren that, because the plane from here was delayed, he had missed the connecting flight to Amsterdam. Luckily it could be arranged that he was booked on a KLM-flight, but how nervous the poor boy (on his own) should have been. Meanwhile we have started with gymnastics for the legs of the juvenile Buzzard > seems to be in the knee-joints !! At 2.08 p.m. a phone-call from Thermís about 2 young Sparrows > will be sent by the 5.30-p.m.-coach from Mytiléne. And those we had in our possession at 6.20 p.m.; on our way back to the L.W.H. we only heard sounds coming out of the box which werent al all sparrow-like . . . . !! It was too melodious. What species exactly they are well find out (hopefully) the coming days. It looks like a Serin, but the design of the breast-feathers isnt fitting. So for the time being taken-in as SERINUS XX. And after a whole evening of puzzling the GREENFINCH is the most probably matching > so see over there. June 6th: all outdoor-cats were again present this morning and in the Sick-Bay all was still alive. The juvenile Little Owl was 163 (+8), the old Dark Barn Owl 294 (+13 !!), the Kestrel 187 (+1) and the Eleonora 366 (+3) gram. The juvenile Buzzard was 757 (+35) gram. The Pigeon was 222 (=) and the Baby Moorhen 45 (+7) gram. The Hooded Crow was 301 (-4) gram. Tortoises: competitors number 0901 was 32 (-1), -0902 was 19 (+1), -0903 was 31 (+2), -0904 was 35 (+2) and 0905 was 29 (-1) gram. Juvenile Barn Owls: doubleorange was 448 (-9), green 419 (+9), red 419 (+9), orange 424 (+7), purple 375 (-1), blue 326 (+14) and yellow 185 (+6) gram. With the Sparrows and the Greenfinches all is well. Without any problems the stray cat Prummel (09-026; March 31st) was delivered from two overripe ovariae. And while she underwent the surgery, her three children (* May 31st 09) Arwen, Gandalf and Meriadoc were transferred to the House-next-door. As soon as the injury it allows, Prummel will depart in that direction as well. If she is getting well as an indoor-cat, she can stay; if no and she is becoming an outdoor-cat again she cant in any case enlarge the population of stray cats anymore. The scalped Pigeon (09-040; May 5th 09) was transferred at 9 a.m. to the Aviary for flying-practices; as well we still be able to control if its eating. Changing the bandages of the Greylag Goose we noticed joyfully fresh pink tissue !! After more and more new flight-feathers are visible at the juvenile Buzzard (so we can see the color and the design) were starting re-classification as a LONG-LEGGED BUZZARD, which is done now. At the end of the morning Prummel was transferred to the Hose-next-door as well, but the whole family is feeling (and behaving) literally like a cat in a strange ware-house !! Were carefully diminishing the amount of feedings for the juvenile Barn Owls with one > the pressure for us was becoming too high !! At 6.02 p.m. a phone-call from mytilene about a geráki with the seize of a SPARROW > so will most probably be a SWIFT. Will arrive tomorrow with the 12-oclock-coach. June 7th: in the Sick-Bay all patients were still alive early this morning, but in The Keep the one-winged adult Long-eared Owl (08-028; March 18th 08) was discovered drowned in the water-basin . . . . !! The Moorhen was 46 (+1), the Hooded Cow 310 (+9) and the Pigeon 224 (+2) gram. The Long-legged Buzzard was 797 (+40), the Kestrel 186 (-1) and the Eleonora 375 (+9) gram. The juvenile Little Owl was 166 (+3) and the adult Dark Barn Owl 287 (-7) gram. Tortoises: competitors number 0901 was 31 (-1), -0902 was 18 (-1), -0903 was 31 (=), -0904 was 35 (=) and 0905 was 30 (+1) gram. Juvenile Barn Owls: doubleorange was 440 (-8), green 442 (+13), red 422 (+3), orange 432 (+8), purple 396 (+21), blue 341 (+15) and yellow 202 (+17) gram. With the Sparrows and the Greenfinches everything is OK. In the House-next-door Prummels babies have adapted quite well, but mum herself is still hiding behind the computer in the 2nd floor and hasnt yet eaten. The yesterday transferred to the Aviary scalped Pigeon is doing well over there; if independently is eaten already we havent had the time to see it due to all work. The amputation-injury of the Greylag Goose is complete dry now. We only have to wait till the dry dead tissue can be removed safely. The same can be said from the Eleonora. With the help of some Pallas-food (food for the smaller birds-of-prey, of which she always was eating the fallen pieces in the Sick-Bay) we got Prummel eating again. She isnt hiding behind the computer anymore, but a bit more in sight under the computer-top (so still the 2nd floor). We received 4 visitors from Athens. In vain we have been riding twice to the petrol-station, but to birdie on board !! The discoverer is checking now what has happened with the bird, because she indeed has delivered the box at the main bus-station in Mytiléne. Around 3 p.m. the air-temperature in the shed was 30° C > so we have watered the tortoise-pen extra avoiding having boiled tortoises . . . . !! And for tomorrow there is a yellow weather-alert due to expected high temperatures !! June 8th: after some of our outdoor-cats had been singing last night under our bedroom-window, they all were present this morning and that happened without serious problems !! We still have a yellow weather-alert for the coming days due to expected high temperatures. In the Sick-Bay all patients were still alive. The little Moorhen was 54 (+8), the Hooded Crow 315 (+5) and the Pigeon 227 (+3) gram. The Long-legged Buzzard was 827 (+30), the Kestrel 188 (+2) and the Eleonora 372 (-3) gram. The juvenile Little Owl was 168 (+2) and the adult Dark Barn Owl 284 (-3) gram. Tortoises: competitors number 0901 was 34 (+3), -0902 was 18 (=), -0903 was 32 (+1), -0904 was 35 (=) and 0905 was 30 (=) gram. Juvenile Barn Owls: doubleorange was 435 (-5), green 438 (-4), red 423 (+1), orange 433 (+1), purple 403 (+7), blue 343 (+2) and yellow 213 (+11) gram. The juvenile Sparrows and Greenfinches still are doing fine. We started carefully removing dead tissue from the wing-limb of the Greylag Goose; even more carefully this was the case with the Eleonora. At 9.03 a.m. a phone-call from the Agrotikí Stégi in Kallonís that one had brought over there a little Hedgehog > so we went and picked it up. See further at EASTERN HEDGEHOG. At 12 oclock the thermometer gave +31° C in the shadow !! We received Dutch visitors at the end of the morning. And while they were guided around one came all the way from Palaiókipos bringing a, discovered in the streets, SWIFT > see over there. At 2.30 p.m. the thermometer had risen till plus 33° C !! At 8.30 p.m. a little boy at our door with a (maybe injured) juvenile COLLARED DOVE fast in one hand > see over there. The silver Greenfinch was breathing quite difficult at the last feeding . . . ?? June 9th: all six outdoor-cats were present again this morning (without a concert last night !!). At 5.25 we discovered the silver Greenfinch laying dead on its back. The little Moorhen was 62 (+8), the new Collared Dove was 118, the Pigeon 229 (+2) and the Hooded Crow was 317 (+2) gram. The Kestrel was 187 (-1), the Eleonora 377 (+6), the Long-legged Buzzard 872 (+45), the juvenile Little Owl 171 (+3) and the old Dark Barn Owl 287 (+3) gram. The Hedgehog had diminished a bit > 123 (-4), but had eaten already a bit. Tortoises: competitors number 0901 was 31 (-3), -0902 was 18 (=), -0903 was 33 (+1), -0904 was 35 (=) and 0905 was 30 (=) gram. Juvenile Barn Owls: doubleorange was 436 (+1), green 441 (+3), red 425 (+2), orange 432 (-1), purple 408 (+5), blue 347 (+4) and yellow 225 (+12) gram. Nothing special with the Sparrows, the Greenfinch and the Swift. In the House-next-door the cat-population is getting more and more used to each other. At 8.52 a.m. the KTEL (Bus-Company) phoned that they should send with the 11-oclock-coach a little birdie > so probably they have learned something from the disappearing into the blue sky of the Swift from last Sunday !! When its the same bird, well have a lot of maggots over here !! And at 9.05 a.m. the 2nd Animal-Lovers Society Kivotós phoned that they had a little rabbit (if we have understood well), which is coming with the same coach. On inquiry it showed to concern a little Fox > a problem where we should lodge this little one !! At the Greylag Goose a clear separation is visible in between dead and healthy tissue !! Today again meat had to be processed and together with Janice (who came only herefor) and Tjarda 15,555 kilo (for 90,46 Euro; total now this year 354,490 kilo for 2213,31 Euro) was done. Two visitors from Elten (D). The birdie we had in our hands at 11.51 (because the box fell out of the coach) > see further at SWIFT. And so the little Fox one minute later, because the box was covered with all kinds of trunks > see further at DOG-FOX. At 2.20 p.m. (so good-bye siesta !!) a phone-call from Myrsíni Tourvalí that she should bring in between 5 and 6 p.m. a young Sparrow. The thermometer reached today only 32° C !! And the SPARROW was here at 6.27 > see over there. At 7.45 p.m. a little boy from our village arrived with a young bird > he held it with both pulse-joints if he was carrying a chicken for the slaughter. He was praised for the bringing and dispraised for the handling > see further at SWIFT. June 10th: all patients were still alive this morning !! The little Dog-Fox had eaten well and the same could be said about his digestion !! The little Moorhen was 68 (+6), the Eastern Hedgehog 126 (+3), the Hooded Crow was 326 (+9), the juvenile Collared Dove 103 (-15) and the Pigeon 229 (=) gram. The juvenile Little Owl was 174 (+3) and the old Dark Barn Owl 284 (-3) gram. The Long-legged Buzzard was 880 (+8), the Kestrel 186 (-1) and the Eleonora 384 (+7) gram. Tortoises: competitors number 0901 was 37 (+6), -0902 was 18 (=), -0903 was 30 (-3), -0904 was 36 (+1) and 0905 was 30 (=) gram. Juvenile Barn Owls: doubleorange was 432 (-4), green 434 (-7), red 416 (-9), orange 425 (-7), purple 419 (+11), blue 354 (+7) and yellow 235 (+10) gram. The other juvenile little birds nothing special to mention. We have noticed now that the juvenile Long-legged Buzzard, except from 2 bended legs, as well has a fracture of the right wing > were starting seriously thinking about putting down now !! At 8.59 a.m. a phone-call from the vet Myrsíni Tourvalí in Mytiléne that she is sending with the 11-oclock-coach a little pigeon. At 9.50 a.m. we had with more than only tears in our eyes giving-over the juvenile Long-legged Buzzard in other hands> was gone at the moment. Showed afterwards having (or had) several fractures in the limbs of the body (both legs, right wing, coccyx) with deformations and loss of function(s). We received 6 Dutch visitors. The little pigeon we had in our hands at 11.47 a.m. > see further at PIGEON. And after looking better at this birdie it shouldnt surprise us when after all it will be a ROCK DOVE, but first lots of new feathers should grow !! At 8.35 p.m. suddenly our dentist and her brother (the chemist) from Kallonís were at our doorstep with a huge box wherein a very diminished Swift; was discovered in their courtyard > see further at SWIFT. The discoverers had not the faintest idea what kind of bird it was after all !! June 11th: all six outdoor-cats were present again early this morning. In the Sick-Bay all were alive as well !! The Moorhen was 73 (+5), the Collared Dove 105 (+2), the Pigeon 230 (+1) and the (maybe) Rock Dove 144 (-3) gram. The Hedgehog was 129 (+3) and the Hooded Crow 337 (+11) gram. The Little Owl was 178 (+4), the old Dark Barn Owl 283 (-1), the Kestrel 185 (-1) and the Eleonora 391 (+7) gram. Tortoises: competitors number 0901 was 36 (-1), -0902 was 17 (-1), -0903 was 32 (+2), -0904 was 35 (-1) and 0905 was 29 (-1) gram. Juvenile Barn Owls: doubleorange was 419 (-13), green 447 (+13), red 420 (+4), orange 438 (+13), purple 424 (+15), blue 362 (+8) and yellow 247 (+12) gram. The other small (juvenile) birds nothing special. Release: we could release very well at the Mylopótamos-river the juvenile Long-eared Owl (09-058; May 16th) > was flying straight out of our hands to the other side of the river and landed in a tree. We had to stitch the injury in the rear-leg of the little Dog-fox-cub, because there is quite a lot of loss of fluids from there. The whole of Greece has a yellow weather-alert due to high temperatures. The 2nd Greenfinch was discovered not alive anymore at 12.25 p.m. > started yesterday already with falling back. So most probably they both were kicked out of the nest by the parents due to inborn defects. At 12.54 p.m. a phone-call from someone who already some days ago had found a little tortoise, who now remembered our name and had decided to bring the little one tonight. We have been busy the whole afternoon and a part of the evening with the search for the two really beautiful German Shepherds, which were lodged in the deserted houslet > we had the strong suspicion that someone had let them disappear because the Town-Hall called us this morning about phone-numbers of animal-lovers-societies, because they had two stray dogs. Our opposite-neighbor, who is named the Canadian because he still must live half of the year in Canada due to his pension-rights, has a skylophobia (fear for dogs) as huge as the Big Ben. And while he yesterday was planting lettuce and tomatoes in his garden, those dogs were looking down on him from 3 meter high. He decided that they had a glance in the eyes that they wanted to jump down and tear him into pieces, and so is the truth . . . . !! Those dogs (mark you, on the property of someone else) should be chained (because he was wetting his pants) so they couldnt see him and he couldnt see them !! So quite strange both dogs had disappeared this morning and the Municipality had two stray dogs . . . . !! Thanks to our information the dogs could be traced and reunified with their owners !! However, we fear that the lettuce-plants and tomatoes wont live very long !! At 7.33 p.m. we heard in the pigeon-cage in The Keep a soft, pitiful squeaking > showed to be a just hatched pigeon, which was severe pecked on the head by some other pigeons > taken with us and taken-in. See further at PIGEON. Because the Dog-Fox-cub was feeling quite warm and during measuring had a body-temperature of 39.8° Celsius, we have started with antibiotics. The announced tortoise we had in our possession at 9.13 p.m. > see further at STRIPE-NECKED TERRAPIN. June 12th: at 5.20 a.m. the smallest baby-tortoise (09-042; May 6th, competitors number 0902, was discovered laying on its back and not alive anymore. Further all patients were alive. The Little Moorhen was 79 (+6), the Hooded Crow 338 (+1), the Collared Dove 109 (+4), the eldest Pigeon 235 (+5), the (may be) Rock Dove 158 (+14) and the yesterday evening taken-in injured juvenile Pigeon was 163 (-18) gram. The Hedgehog was 133 (+4) gram. The Little Owl was 181 (+3), the old Dark Barn Owl 288 (+5), the Kestrel 188 (+3) and the Eleonora 386 (-5) gram. Tortoises: competitors number 0901 was 35 (-1), -0903 was 32 (=), -0904 was 35 (=) and 0905 was 28 (-1) gram. Juvenile Barn Owls: doubleorange was 433 (+14), green 440 (-7), orange 442 (+4), red 427 (+7), purple 443 (+19), blue 374 (+12) and yellow 259 (+12) gram. The pecked juvenile Pigeon from the Keep isnt doing well > but after all is having an immense hemorrhage on the skull !! At 7.50 a.m. was discovered dead in one of the seed-bowls in the Aviary the juvenile Sparrow doublegreen (09-059; May 17th), which was lodged there since June 4th. At 8.39 a.m. a phone-call from Mytiléne about a little swallow > will be send by the 11-oclock-coach. Release: the Stripe-necked Terrapin from late yesterday-evening was released very well at 8.46 a.m. in the Mylopótamos-river. Had been lodged for already days in quite a small ( 16 x 13 cm !!) basin !! At 9.15 a.m. the juvenile Pigeon from yesterday was discovered not alive anymore. The little Dog-Fox received a new splint > is eating quite bad since yesterday. And while we were on our way to pick-up the announced swallow, two Dutch visitors. At 11.53 a.m. we had the birdie > see further at SWIFT. At 12.15 p.m. a phone-call from Mytiléne about a geráki as huge as a hand > so will be again a Swift, but they must have small hands. Will be brought in any case. And was here at 1.25 p.m. > see indeed further at SWIFT. Meanwhile the thermometer had risen until above 33° C !! At 8.05 p.m. was rescued out of the water-bowl in the pigeon-cage in The Keep a (quite gentle) brown Pigeon, which had gone for a swim without having a license. Taken with us, dried and taken-in. So see further at PIGEON. June 13th: the almost drowned Pigeon was still alive at 4.50 a.m. but thats all that can be said !! The little Moorhen was 86 (+7), the Hooded Crow 340 (+2), the Collared Dove 112 (+3), the eldest Pigeon 240 (+5) and the (maybe) Rock Dove 156 (-2) gram. The Hedgehog was 156 (+23) gram. The Little Owl was 183 (+2), the old Dark Barn Owl 289 (+1), the Kestrel 188 (=) and the Eleonora 387 (+1) gram. Tortoises: competitors number 0901 was 33 (-2), -0903 was 33 (+1), -0904 was 35 (=) and 0905 was 30 (+2) gram. Juvenile Barn Owls: doubleorange was 407 (-26), green 435 (-7), orange 446 (+4), red 416 (-11), purple 449 (+6), blue 384 (+10) and yellow 267 (+8) gram. Other little birds nothing special to mention. The yesterday died juvenile pecked Pigeon, which we had given as food for the Barn Owls, wasnt eaten over there. However, the little Dog-Fox took the corpse with pleasure into his nest-box !! We have discovered that in the Aviary one of the disabled Collared Doves (is one-eyed) isnt well and is sitting languid on the bottom > so a good observation is necessary. The Pigeon with the digestion-problems (09-068; May 30th) was transferred to the Aviary for wildering. And the first what was done over there was taking an extended bath !! Meanwhile we have started in the House-next-Door preparing the rooms for the coming of new volunteers (since the replacement of some windows nothing was cleaned over there): Tuesday around midday two from Holland and Wednesday early in the morning one from Russia !! Well need them desperately, because only the two of us cant manage it any more !! Early in the morning our Tjarda came with her Tom-Cat Kummel, which should be quite bad > most probably (again) a light TIA, but the paralysis-symptoms were fading away already. Hereafter 5 Norwegian visitors from Sørreisa, Troms. Meanwhile again a new juvenile SWIFT was brought-in > see over there. And while the visitors were leaving, Tjarda came back with her cat, which was progressively worse > the lungs were overfilled. See further at TOM-CAT. at 1.20 p.m. two women with a discovered juvenile Sparrow > see at HOUSE SPARROW. At 5.20 p.m. the almost drowned Pigeon (from yesterday) definitively had gone into heaven without using the wings. Hereafter we have brought a wagon-load of hand-woven Greek carpets to the rubbish-dump > with all doggies and cats, and with a working central heating there was no need for them anymore and it was only collecting lots of dust. June 14th: no victims early this morning. The little Moorhen was 93 (+7), the Hooded Crow 345 (+5), the Collared Dove 116 (+4) and the (maybe) Rock Dove 163 (+7) gram. The Hedgehog was 171 (+15) gram. The Little Owl was 185 (+2), the old Dark Barn Owl 287 (-2), the Kestrel 184 (-4) and the Eleonora 388 (+1) gram. Tortoises: competitors number 0901 was 36 (+3), -0903 was 34 (+1), -0904 was 38 (+3) and 0905 was 31 (+1) gram. Juvenile Barn Owls: doubleorange was 404 (-3), green 437 (+2), orange 448 (+2), red 423 (+7), purple 447 (-2), blue 399 (+15) and yellow 275 (+8) gram. The four juvenile Sparrows and the 7 juvenile Swifts are all doing well. It seems if the left rear-leg of the little Dog-Fox is lamed > he tries to stand and to walk on the splinted (right) leg !! The one-eyed Collared Dove in the Aviary was still alive this morning !! At 7.59 a.m. suddenly there was a complete black-out on the whole island, and electricity came back at 8.27 a.m. And thereafter the control-box of the satellite-disc ( 2 days old) suddenly wasnt working anymore !! We started treating the two fracture-injuries in the leg of the little Dog-Fox (as well the Tibia as the Fibula are broken, but on different places) with Dermisol-Cream in stead of with the Solvens. The yesterday deceased Pigeon was accepted with pleasure by the little Fox. From the wing-limb of the Greylag Goose we have been able to remove so much dead tissue, that in a day or so the last surgery can be performed. During the taking-out of the doggies (before the beginning of the siesta) a little boy on a bike came sweatening driving upwards with in one hand fast a young bird > see further at HOUSE SPARROW. The June 11th already mentioned Canadian opposite-neighbor with the skylophobia is turning the loop the loop completely now: he has hammered tight with nails and wood the windows of the deserted houslet (mention well: other mans property !!) and is making the fence around his field sóó high and with barbed wire if he is expecting a new invasion of the Turks again . . . . !! June 15th: no victims this morning !! The little Moorhen was 100 (+7), the Hedgehog 174 (+3), the Hooded Crow 353 (+8), the Collared Dove 117 (+1) and the (maybe) Rock Dove 162 (-1) gram. Juvenile Barn Owls: doubleorange was 407 (+3), green 427 (-10), orange 444 (-4), red 418 (-5), purple 449 (+2), blue 404 (+5) and yellow 280 (+5) gram. All five juvenile Sparrows and seven juvenile Swifts are doing fine. And speaking about the latter kind we cant remember the time we had so many of them at the same moment > must have been on the old location (so before 2001 !!). Today meat had to be processed again and the three ladies (Ineke, Tjarda & Janice) have done 17,740 kilo (for 98,04 Euro; total now this year 370,230 kilo for 2310,35 Euro). At 9.31 a.m. a young bird was brought-in by a well-known to us young boy > see at HOUSE MARTIN. Around midday two German visitors from Oldenburg (Oldenburg). Because of the coming of the new volunteers we have tried counting our patient-amount: at least 163 !! At 7.30 p.m. the one-eyed Collared Dove in the Aviary (blue-left/silver-right; already years over here) we had written about some days ago, discovered not alive anymore. Meanwhile everything is prepared for the transport and re-homing tomorrow of the little kitten Joréns Monster (09-051; May 13th ) in Deventer (Holland). June 16th: all was alive this morning and all six outdoor-cats were present this morning for their breakfast !! The little Moorhen was 108 (+8), the Hedgehog 180 (+6), the Hooded Crow 356 (+3), the Collared Dove 123 (+6) and the (maybe) Rock Dove 169 (+7) gram. The Little Owl was 185 (-1), the old Dark Barn Owl 284 (+1), the Kestrel 184 (=) and the Eleonora 390 (-4) gram. Tortoises: competitors number 0901 was 38 (+1), -0903 was 36 (+1), -0904 was 39 (+1) and 0905 was 32 (=) gram. Juvenile Barn Owls: doubleorange was 401 (-6), green 428 (+1), orange 443(-1), red 417 (-1), purple 452 (+3), blue 417 (+13) and yellow 286 (+6) gram. The 13 young birdies all are doing fine with 8 feedings a day !! At 7.30 a.m. we received a phone-call from the two volunteers who should arrive today that they had missed the plane because the travel-documents of one of them werent valid anymore > around the time they had settled this, they couldnt check-in anymore . . . . !! But one is able to travel within the Sjengen-countries only on the ID-card, isnt it ?? Re-homing: at 8.36 a.m. the little Joréns Monster was handed-over in the hands of two good friends of us, who will be the Foster-parents during the trip and deliver the little one into the hands of the owner, our ex-trainee Joren, on Amsterdam-Schiphol-Airport. At 9 a.m. a phone-call from Eressoú (a certain Allison), who had a little birdie > she was told to bring it here, because our car wont come in that direction for the time being. There are two immense holes in the leg of the little Dog-Fox, where bone-splinters have penetrated the skin. However, its starting becoming more and more clean. So well continue with the Dermisol. At 9.38 a.m. again a call from Eressoú about that birdie > we were told that ánd it was a young Sparrow, ánd that they hadnt the possibility bringing it today > tomorrow it will be possible. They were told what and how to feed till tomorrow. And meanwhile all kind of phone-calls about those two volunteers . . . . We hadnt even time for a breakfast . . . . !! We received as well visitors from England and Holland: 4 people who all have done, still are doing and want to do so in the future everything to help us. They even want to create a job for a worker over here !! At 11.35 a.m. a phone-call from Mytiléne from the vet Myrsíni Tourvalí that shell send with the 1.15 p.m.-coach a Sparrow and a Pigeon. And even a bit later a call from the discoverer of the pigeon that he will come and bring the bird himself and is taken the sparrow with him as well. And he was here at 12.57 p.m. > see at ROCK DOVE and at HOUSE SPARROW. At the same moment 2 Dutch visitors. And the late siesta just had started, when a juvenile SWIFT was brought-in > see over there. After at 12 oclock we had fed the Eleonoras Falcon, we thought it would be good for him being out in the fresh air (in spite of the amputation-injury not being 100%). Was he in his sickbay-cage laying/sitting quite lethargically, now he was seen at 5.05 p.m. proudly sitting on a branch in the back of the peregrine-aviary > so lets give him a chance over there (hoping for the best). So tomorrow with the preparing of the food taking care of extra food over there !! Amount of patients is now (at least) 164 !! At 6.03 p.m. a phone-call from Paralía Thermís about a gull in a bad condition > because at that moment we couldnt leave at all (feeding-time), they were bringing the bird themselves > see further at YELLOW-LEGGED GULL. And after we had stabled this one for the night in an empty cage, we were called at 7.44 p.m. by a woman who asked if we had discovered the birdie she had left in our court-yard > luckily this had been in an empty bat-cage. It was a LITTLE GREBE > so see over there. June 17th: no victims early this morning, so a patient-amount of at least 166. The little Moorhen was 116 (+8) and the Little Grebe 134 (-7) gram. The Hedgehog was 200 (+20), the Hooded Crow 355 (-1), the Collared Dove 127 (+4), the Rock Dove with the amputated wing 240 and the (maybe) Rock Dove 172 (+4) gram. The Little Owl was 191 (+6), the old Dark Barn Owl 289 (+5) and the Kestrel 182 (-2) gram. Tortoises: competitors number 0901 was 37 (-1), -0903 was 36 (=), -0904 was 39 (=) and 0905 was 32 (=) gram. Juvenile Barn Owls: doubleorange was 398 (-3), green 420 (-8), orange 447 (+4), red 416 (-1), purple 451 (-1), blue 423 (+6) and yellow 287 (+1) gram. All 15 little birdies are doing fine. The Eleonora was seen sitting proudly straight in the peregrine-aviary > now watch if we can see him eating !! The Yellow-legged Gull had vomited yesterday-evening all the given food and did the same this morning > old and at the end of his days ?? By the owners of the poisoned cat of last month (09-049; May 10th) 3,158 kilo of good meat was brought for our birds of prey. Releases: at 7.35 a.m. were released well the Swifts purple-right (09-089) and green-left (090096). And at 8.52 a.m. was released in the Mylopótamos-river the Little Grebe: was first swimming a bit and drank a lot and disappeared hereafter under water like an arrow. At 9.40 a.m. arrived after a journey which had lasted days our Russian volunteer Ilia. At 10.30 a.m. arrived the announced young sparrow > see at HOUSE SPARROW. During the siesta the thermometer rose again above the 33 ° Celsius !! So we had to water the tortoise-pen for the 2nd time today. The Yellow-legged Gull was at that time still alive, but that was all that could be said. And while we at 3.55 p.m. were sitting with a feeding-apron full of Barn Owls, the dogs started barking and it showed to be someone who had came all the way from Mytiléne to bring us a little Sparrow, discovered in the Agorá over there > see further at HOUSE SPARROW. After having seen the food-bowls which are taken back, the Eleonora still hasnt eaten yet, but he was fed so well to manage it some days without. The Yellow-legged Gull was still alive at 5.05 p.m. and as well at 7.30 p.m. The juvenile Sparrow (double yellow; 09-092 from the 14th), we had to rescue yesterday out of the bath, was not alive anymore at 7.45 p.m. June 18th: and the thermometer didnt come under the 24° Celsius last night !! In the Sick-Bay all were still alive at 5.30 a.m. The little Moorhen was 120 (+4), the Hedgehog 216 (+16) and the Hooded Crow 349 (-6) gram. The yellow Sparrow (09-069A; June 2nd) was discovered still alive at 6 a.m., but this changed 10 minutes later !! The other little birds nothing special to mention. The Yellow-legged Gull was standing proudly straight in his cage and we were able (without vomiting) to force-feed a bit. The brother/sister of the above mentioned yellow Sparrow ( the purple one) was transferred at 7.57 a.m. to the Aviary > showed later to have taken an extended bath. We received a phone-call from Mytiléne that surplus-food for the young Moorhen was send by the 11-oclock-coach > although it concerns living animals (meal- & wax-worms), not in the statistics. We received 2 Dutch visitors. At 2.53 p.m. a phone-call from someone who announced in English that he had over there a little boy who wanted to bring a birdie > when this was possible ? Told that such a thing could be done always > the boy was here 5 minutes later and it was the same one who had brought as well Swift nr 3. He hold the bird better now in his hands !! See fur this bird as well at SWIFT. Were succeeding more and more feeding the Yellow-legged Gull > there is a better swallowing, although still a lot is given-back !! Nothing special with the little birdies, but there are some Swifts which want to leave soon !! Without vomiting we were able to feed the Yellow-legged Gull. At 7.40 a.m. the yesterday transferred to the Aviary purple Sparrow was discovered moribund on the bottom of the Aviary > at the spot taken with us and fed again. Releases: at 7.43 a.m. with a huge swing into the air was released the orange juvenile Swift (09-086), three minutes later followed by the yellow one (09-087). The yesterday in our siesta brought-in juvenile Swift (green-left; 09-101) stopped to breathe at 8.41 a.m. We were able to do the wing-correction at our Mother-the-Goose during which 6 cm of bone (partial alive, partial death) which was completely without covering of other tissue was removed. The new injury could be stitched well. Assistance was given by a real fire-proof Ilia. At 9.43 a.m. a phone-call from Mólivos that the Dutch visitors from yesterday wanted to adopt and take with them to Holland the he-dog Mázzel (08-196; October 11th 08). Release: at 10.03 a.m. we could release very well the juvenile House Martin (09-093; June 15th). At 10.35 a.m. a phone-call from Myrsíni Tourvalí that she had a little black bird, which should grow still a lot and which she should send by the 11-oclock-coach. And that one we had at 11.45 a.m. > see at JACKDAW. Meanwhile the new owners went with Mázzel to Kallonís for micro-chipping, rabies-vaccination and for a bench. They were back around 2 p.m. and brought with them as well a juvenile Sparrow, discovered in Kallonís > see at HOUSE SPARROW. The this morning taken-back from the Aviary purple Sparrow had promoted himself into fox-food at 3.38 p.m. June 20th: the juvenile Sparrow, yesterday discovered in Kallonís, was at 6.05 a.m. not with the quick anymore. Juvenile Barn Owls: doubleorange was 398 (-4), green 411 (-1), orange 442 (+3), red 410 (-1), purple 441 (-6), blue 440 (+3) and yellow 290 (+1) gram. We started carefully feeding those birds some more coarse food. Releases: at 7.35 a.m. we have released very well both juvenile Swifts (09-076; June 8th and 09-081; June 9th). At 8.23 a.m. a phone-call from Pétra about a cat which had a pussing injury which didnt want to close. Told we could have a look if she could pass-by. And the owner was here at 9.05 > see further at TOM-CAT. At 9.36 a.m. a phone-call from Polichnítos about a huge brown with black bird (bigger than a cock), which was sitting on a roof-top and hardly could fly; could be injured. And while we were preparing for turning-out to catch the bird (9.58 a.m.), the operation was cancelled > the bird had flown away. The limb-injury of the Greylag Goose is very quiet and is smelling well. However, the injuries in the rear-leg of the little Dog-Fox are clean, but thats the only positive that can be said. At 1-.04 a.m. a phone-call from an elderly lady, who was walking difficultly, who had an owlet > we picked it up. See further at LITTLE OWL. At 11.35 a.m. another phone-call, this time from the Agrotikí Stégi in Kallonís that they had over there a Swift > if we could . . . .. But luckily the discoverer wanted to bring the bird himself. Was here at 11.55 a.m. > see at SWIFT. After the siesta two Belgian visitors. Release: and while the visitors watched the force-feedings, the this morning brought-in adult Swift was released quite well. We have taken a picture of our Mother-the-Goose while she was sitting quietly in our court-yard. On the picture we have drawn an arrow to show where the amputated wing had been > without this arrow one can hardly see that she has only one wing. Craftsmanship is Mastership . . . . !! And none of the vets on the island dared to do this job !!
June 21st: no victims this morning. The little Moorhen was 139 (+4), the Hedgehog 255 (+24), the young Jackdaw 117 (+6) and the Hooded Crow 346 (-7) gram. At 9.14 a.,. a car at our door from Sikamínia with (according to the bearer) a Búfos (Eagle Owl). However see further at PALE BARN OWL. And while that bird arrived we were busy with the splintered leg of the little Dog Fox: we have removed two sharp bone-protuberances (which constantly penetrated the skin) and the splint was done on two sides of the leg. Injuries are closing. But the lamed left rear-leg is still without force. We have transferred the little Moorhen for a while to a cage where really a swim could be done. As well the young Hooded Crow was allowed out for some hours. The wing-limp of the Greylag Goose only needed a dry piece of bandage. After some time the young Hooded Crow was sitting in front of the blind Rook and was begging to be fed . . . . of course without any notice of the Rook !! The little Moorhen didnt like it at all taken-in back again and tried to escape constantly. At 1.06 p.m. a phone-call from Mytiléne about a gull which had something with one wing and due to this couldnt fly. Bird wasnt yet caught. Lots of auxiliary-forces were called and suddenly the story of a crow was walking through the story of the gull > so a Babylonian confusion of tongues. The crow wasnt in the picture anymore at 1.40 p.m., but the gull was meanwhile caught by others, we heard at 1.50 p.m. Will be sent by the 6.45 p.m.-coach. And five minutes later a phone-call that they should bring the bird. At 2.50 p.m. a phone-call that they were lost in our village and didnt know where exactly they were. After lots of questions we found out they were at the cemetery. Driven to them and the bird was handed over > see further at YELLOW-LEGGED GULL. At 5 p.m. we were busy feeding while from the cage of the little Fox the sounds came from the funeral-meal of the Gull . . . !! At 9.45 p.m. a phone-call from Mytiléne from our village-notary that she had a disturbed nest swallows, and that 3 or 4 were still alive > shell bring them tomorrow. June 22nd: after all the little Dog-Fox had only eaten one leg of the gull, and that doesnt seem to have been a limb of fat > so the carcass was removed. The little Moorhen was 139 (=), and the Hedgehog 282 (+27) gram. The young Jackdaw was 122 (+5) and the Hooded Crow 339 (-7) gram. The Collared Dove was 149 (+8), the amputated Rock Dove 234 (+4) and the (maybe) Rock Dove 193 (+3) gram. The old Dark Barn Owl was 272 (+1), the Kestrel 179 (=), the green Little Owl 204 (+4) and the orange 213 (+10) gram. The new (purpleorange) Pale Barn Owl was 318 (+9) gram. Little birdies everything under control. The Yellow-legged Gull seems to be completely blind > is bumping up against everything . . . . !! At 8.30 a.m. a phone-call from a certain Vassílis in Skála Eressoú that he had a young bird-of-prey (NO Swift, because the colors were brown) which had wingproblems and not in such a good condition. When our car was back at 8.55 a.m. from buying meat and we made a call for a meeting-point, the bird had gone to heaven meanwhile . . . . !! At arrival of the notary at 9.07 a.m. it showed to be the case she herself had destroyed (by accident) the nest by opening a shutter too wide. She brought 4 young HOUSE MARTINS > see over there. Today meat had to be processed again (16,520 kilo for 107,71 Euro; total this year now 386,750 kilo for 2412,06 Euro) and this happened by Janice, Tjarda and Ineke with as assistant the young Ilia. The leg-injuries of the young Dog-Fox are closing and it seems if some force is coming back in the lamed leg. We used again Dermisol-cream for the injury of our Mother-the-Goose > there is a lot of tension on the total and maybe this is helping a bit. GOODBYEOur very shy cat Tónia (02-186), which had entered the L.W.H. July 26th 2002 as a tiny little one with an immense eye-tumor in the right eye, and of which in any case we had been able rescuing partly the left eye, was already for days slowly fading away > she wasnt eating any more, was only drinking little bits and was diminishing before our eyes. At 12.15 p.m. she surrendered and wasnt fighting anymore. We have thanked her for the nice time we had with her in the beginning; the time she wasnt yet chased by all other cats (even by complete blind ones !!), and have letting her depart quietly in her own way. At 2.45 p.m. the moment was there she never had to be frightened anymore to be chased . . . . At this moment the was our eldest cat, and the two of us have buried her in the hedgehog-cage on top of The Keep. The thermometer reached easily the 30° Celsius today !! At 8.25 p.m. still two young ladies from our village at our door with a tiny little sparrow, they had found on the doorstep of their house. See further at HOUSE SPARROW. June 23rd: all patients were still alive this morning; even the tiny Sparrow from last evening. The little Moorhen was 142 (+3), the Hedgehog 286 (+4), the Hooded Crow 345 (+6) and the Jackdaw 135 (+13) gram. The Collared Dove was 150 (+1), the amputated Rock Dove 237 (+3) and the (maybe) Rock Dove 194 (+1) gram. The old Dark Barn Owl was 283 (+11), the Kestrel 180 (+1), the green Little Owl 205 (+1) and the orange 209 (-4) gram. Tortoises: competitors number 0901 was 37 (-2), -0903 was 38 (=), -0904 was 44 (+2) and 0905 was 32 (+1) gram. Juvenile Barn Owls: doubleorange was 409 (+3), green 410 (-4), orange 443 (+7), red 416 (=), purple 447 (+6), blue 448 (-2) and yellow 312 (+9) gram. The new (purpleorange) Pale Barn Owl was 305 (-13) gram. All little birdies were OK. Re-homing: at 8.15 a.m. Mázzel (08-196; October 12th 2008) left for the airport to start a new life in Holland (were hopefully are no idiots who are knocking-down a dog deliberately because he is black, and so he has the devil in him !!) We received 4 Dutch visitors. At 10.50 a.m. a phone-call from Mytiléne about a little Hedgehog, which will be sent by coach (probably the 1.15-p.m. coach). Somewhat later the confirmation: 1.15 p.m. !! Hereafter 3 Dutch visitors. The announced hedgehog we had in our hands at 1.57 p.m. > see further at EASTERN HEDGEHOG. Meanwhile another 2 Dutch visitors. In the evening we heard that the transport of Mázzel had happened without any problems. At 11.15 p.m. the new little Hedgehog was still alive. June 24th: at 4.30 the new Hedgehog was till alive but was rolling quite a lot !! The little Moorhen was 146 (+4), the old Hedgehog 304 (+18) and the new one was 192 (+5) gram. The latter is fed a bit more easy now. The Collared Dove was 153 (+3), the amputated Rock Dove 236 (-1) and the (maybe) Rock Dove 202 (+8) gram. The Hooded Crow was 335 (-10) and the Jackdaw 143 (+8) gram. The old Dark Barn Owl was 284 (+1), the Kestrel 179 (-1), the green Little Owl 202 (-3) and the orange 211 (+2) gram. Tortoises: competitors number 0901 was 39 (+2), -0903 was 40 (+2), -0904 was 46 (+2) and 0905 was 34 (+2) gram. Juvenile Barn Owls: doubleorange was 400 (-9), green 410 (=), orange 434 (-9), red 411 (-5), purple 446 (-1), blue 446 (-2) and yellow 321 (+9) gram. The purpleorange was 335 (+30) gram. All little birdies were still alive. We discovered both Hedgehogs laying in each others arms in the same houslet at 7.30 a.m. > the female is already a lot more quiet, although the tension on the neck and legs still are there. Releases: in between 7.55 and 7.58 a.m. we have released well the four juvenile House Martins (09-109A-D; June 22nd) > they were all flying well (and so for the first time in their lives !!) The doubleblack juvenile Sparrow (09-100; June 17th) made his choice by ascending into the Heaven at 8.31 a.m. The little Dog-Fox was hereafter the undertaker . . . . !! We have tried to release the red juvenile Swift (09-083; June 10th), but not enough lift was built-up under the wings > so in a day or two another try. Our Russian volunteer Ilia told us, after a long conversation which was held with him, that his greatest wish was to spend his time in a Greek-Orthodox Monastery > so we have given him an introductions-letter. It was a nice, good boy, very well suitable for serving coffee in an elderly-peoples-home . . . . !! We have seen on the right thigh of the new Hedgehog (which is quite a lot darker than the male) a skin-injury > was treated with Dermisol-cream. Because the juvenile Jackdaw had to be plucked-away from out of the top of the crow-aviary for the feeding-round, we have given a blue foot-ring to distinguish him/her from the other inhabitants. Both Hedgehogs are now constantly sleeping in each others arms; nose against nose !! And when the female is taken away from there for an extra feeding, the male is appearing after a short while, looking short-sighted where she has gone. At 5.43 p.m. there was someone at our door with the question if we could repair as well ducks with broken wings > he was told to pass-by with the bird. He was back at 5.51 p.m. with the bird > see further at COMMON SHELDUCK. At 6.06 p.m. a phone-call from Mytiléne about an owlet > will be sent by the 9-oclock-coach tomorrow-morning. June 25th: no further victims last night. The little Moorhen was 147 (+1), the male Hedgehog 343 (+39) and the female was 202 (+10) gram. The latter must be fed still completely by hand. The Collared Dove was 157 (+4), the amputated Rock Dove 240 (+4) and the (maybe) Rock Dove 205 (+3) gram. The Jackdaw was 145 (+2) and the Hooded Crow was 336 (+1) gram. The old Dark Barn Owl was 287 (+3), the Kestrel 179 (=), the green Little Owl 204 (+2) and the orange 210 (-1) gram. Tortoises: competitors number 0901 was 40 (+1), -0903 was 40 (=), -0904 was 47 (+1) and 0905 was 35 (+1) gram. Juvenile Barn Owls are coming more and more on their ideal weight: doubleorange was 404 (+4), green 408 (-2), orange 430 (-4), red 414 (+3), purple 442 (-4), blue 441 (-5) and yellow 325 (+4) gram. The purpleorange was 338 (+3) gram. Little birdies: only the green Sparrow is worrying us > isnt doing well !! When at 7.30 a.m. we phoned to know how the owlet was doing, showed that already yesterday-evening (when they approached to catch it), it had flown-away. We have performed a P.M. on the Common Shelduck > see over there. Before it started thunderstorming we received Dutch visitors. The still useful parts of the Shelduck were prepared for the little Fox. At 20.02 p.m. a phone-call about a young Silky-Fowl > if still alive one will pass-by tomorrow-morning. June 26th: all patients still were there early this morning. The little Moorhen was 140 (-7) gram and so should be released as soon as possible. The male Hedgehog was 352 (+9) and the female was 215 (+13) gram. The Collared Dove was 159 (+2), the amputated Rock Dove 240 (=) and the (maybe) Rock Dove (we still cant be sure) 207 (+2) gram. The Jackdaw was 152 (+7) and the Hooded Crow was 347 (+11) gram. The old Dark Barn Owl was 288 (+1), the Kestrel 179 (=), the green Little Owl 202 (-2) and the orange 211 (+1) gram. Tortoises: competitors number 0901 was 39 (-1), -0903 was 42 (+2), -0904 was 47 (=) and 0905 was 35 (=) gram. Juvenile Barn Owls: doubleorange was 407 (+3), green 410 (+2), orange 428 (-2), red 413 (-1), purple 439 (-3), blue 443 (+2) and yellow 325 (=) gram. The purpleorange was 337 (-1) gram. Release: at 8.04 a.m. we have released well in the Mylopótamos-river the Moorhen (09-072; June 4th) > was first swimming for a while and thereafter hiding in the bushes. There are living terrapins over there as well, so plenty of food available. The Greylag Goose is without bandage now and will be taken back tomorrow, if everything is going according to plan. The little Dog-Fox is using the lamed leg more and more. The fractured leg still is bull-shit with a star, but he is using it more and more. With the Silky-Fowl they were here at 10.30 a.m. > for us it looked like something cerebral but one didnt want to hear anything about taking-in. In any case we have given food-advices, because the two month old chicken still was fed with food for just hatched chickens !! Further not in the statistics. Around midday we have transferred our two juvenile Little Owls and the old one for a while transferred to an empty aviary in The Keep; for both young ones as flying-practice and for the old one as a change of the daily-life-routine. For the eldest this had been a waist of time > was around 5 p.m. still sitting where we had placed him. Both youngsters we could try to pluck-away from somewhere in the top of the aviary > lets see tomorrow-morning how this has worked-out on the body-weights !! June 27th: no victims in the Sick-Bay this morning. From our outdoor-cats we have already for a longer period nothing seen or heard from Little Brother > ?? The male Hedgehog was 380 (+28) and the female was 227 (+12) gram. The Collared Dove was 162 (+3), the amputated Rock Dove 241 (+1) and the other one 209 (+2) gram. The Jackdaw was 157 (+5) and the Hooded Crow was 351 (+4) gram. The old Dark Barn Owl was 294 (+6), the Kestrel 178 (-1), the green Little Owl 201 (-1) and the orange 211 (=) gram. Tortoises: competitors number 0901 was 41 (+2), -0903 was 42 (=), -0904 was 49 (+2) and 0905 was 34 (-1) gram. Juvenile Barn Owls: there has been a lot of vomiting in all places of the aviary and doubleorange was 395 (-12), green 402 (-8), orange 409 (-19), red 402 (-11), purple 418 (-11), blue 422 (-11) and yellow 328 (+3) gram. The purpleorange was 338 (+1) gram. Little birdies nothing special. Healthy back to husband: at 9 a.m. our Mother-the-Goose (09-065; May 28th) went back to her husband. Before she left we have taken a picture of the final result.
The little Dog-Fox is standing more and more on the fractured leg > he himself had removed the splint !! We have discovered that the left rear-leg of the female Hedgehog is a bit a hanging-foot. At 12.15 p.m. we have seen, while we were feeding the Barn Owls, that the Dog-Fox (we had left-open his cage-door) passed-by walking on four feet . . . . !! Myrsíni Tourvalí phoned at 12.32 p.m. that she had a young Sparrow > will be sent by the 1.15-p.m. coach. And that birdie we had in our hands at 2.02 p.m. > see further at HOUSE SPARROW. At 7.31 p.m., when during the bringing of the food-bowls for the nocturnals in The Keep we accidentally had a glimpse in the pigeon-cage over there, we discovered that one of the two yesterday hatched Pigeons over there severe was pecked on the head by other ones > taken with us and taken-in. See further at PIGEON. June 28th: the still without ring little Sparrow (nr 10) was not alive anymore ay 6.20 a.m. In The Keep the Barn Owls had been mucking around in such a way that the turn buckle, which locked the door in between the two aviaries, had become free so we discovered a totally mixed population > it took quite a long time before we had caught all juvenile birds and the old-inhabitants had transferred into the right aviary . . . . !! Hedgehogs: the male was 425 (+45) and the female was 240 (+13) gram. The Collared Dove was 163 (+1), the amputated Rock Dove 244 (+3) and the other one 214 (+5) gram. The Jackdaw was 156 (-1) and the Hooded Crow was 347 (-4) gram. The old Dark Barn Owl was 293 (-1), the Kestrel 179 (+1), the green Little Owl 202 (+1) and the orange 215 (+4) gram. Tortoises: competitors number 0901 was 38 (-3), -0903 was 42 (=), -0904 was 48 (-1) and 0905 was 35 (+1) gram. Juvenile Barn Owls: doubleorange was 398 (+3), green 380 (-22), orange 404 (-5), red 397 (-5), purple 419 (+1), blue 418 (-4) and yellow 344 (+16) gram. The purpleorange was 347 (+9) gram. Because the prognosis for the blind Yellow-legged Gull was absolutely infaust (releasing and let nature do the job, should have been cruel, because he couldnt defend himself), we have put him down just after 8 oclock. With the kitten Arwen its not like is should be: refuses to eat and is very languish !! We received 4 Dutch visitors. What we had expected became the truth: the green Sparrow (09-095; June 16th) was discovered not alive anymore at 1.50 p.m. June 29th: no victims this morning !! We havent seen or heard for a longer time now the outdoor-cat Little Brother !! Hedgehogs: the male was 444 (+19) and the female was 251 (+11) gram. The Collared Dove was 167 (+4), the amputated Rock Dove 245 (+1), the other one 214 (=) and the scalped juvenile one 165 (+1) gram. The Jackdaw was 166 (+10) and the Hooded Crow was 343 (-4) gram. The old Dark Barn Owl was 282 (-11), the Kestrel 179 (=), the green Little Owl 201 (-1) and the orange 211 (-4) gram. Tortoises: competitors number 0901 was 39 (+1), -0903 was 43 (+1), -0904 was 48 (=) and 0905 was 34 (-1) gram. Juvenile Barn Owls: doubleorange was 397 (-1), green 392 (+12), orange 407 (+3), red 393 (-4), purple 418 (-1), blue 415 (-3) and yellow 361 (+17) gram. The purpleorange was 354 (+7) gram. Today meat-cutting-day again and Ineke & Tjarda have processed 16,065 kilo (for 106,63 Euro; total now this year 402,815 kilo for 2518,69 Euro). Now the little Dog-Fox is more active, we could see that the right front-leg is bending in a wrong way. Maybe this will improve, just as with the lamed rear-leg. We received lost of visitors just before the siesta: 2 English people from Eftaloú and two Welshmen and thereafter 2 Dutch people and two English from SandbachCheshire (GB). At 4.50 p.m. a phone-call from Sikamínia that they had discovered two Búfi (Eagle Owls) > so we went for a ride. See further at PALE BARN OWL. At 6.16 p.m. a phone-call from Mytiléne that they had found a Stachtára (Swift) > will be sent by the 9-oclock-coach tomorrow. And while we were busy with the last feeding-round of this long day the phone rang and a friendly Dutch female told us she phoned from Mólivos and that she had found a birdie beside the road. She had found a man who wanted to bring the bird > if that was possible now ?? Of course there was answered in a positive way and were now (8 p.m.) in the family way. And at 8.31 p.m. arrived by taxi the birdie > see further at YELLOW-LEGGED GULL. June 30th: all five remnant outdoor-cats were present on the same moment for breakfast > we even had to place a bowl on top of the Aviary to prevent fighting !! At 4.29 a.m. the yesterday-evening taken-in Yellow-legged Gull was discovered not alive anymore. All other patients were still alive. Hedgehogs: the male was 480 (+36) and the female was 267 (+16) gram. The Collared Dove was 170 (+3), the amputated Rock Dove 247 (+2), the other one 220 (+6) and the scalped juvenile one 164 (-1) gram. The Jackdaw was 166 (=) and the Hooded Crow was 348 (+5) gram. The old Dark Barn Owl was 285 (+3), the Kestrel 181 (+2), the green Little Owl 202 (+1) and the orange 211 (=) gram. Tortoises: competitors number 0901 was 40 (+1), -0903 was 42 (-1), -0904 was 48 (=) and 0905 was 35 (+1) gram. Juvenile Barn Owls: doubleorange was 399 (+2), green 389 (-3), orange 407 (=), red 400 (+7), purple 418 (=), blue 416 (+1) and yellow 370 (+9) gram. The purpleorange was 356 (+2), the purplered 302 (+6) and the purpleblue 331 (+13) gram. At 7.50 a.m. we have transferred to the Aviary the (probably) Rock Dove, which after a good and time-taking inspection indeed showed to be a . . . . Street Pigeon. The juvenile Collared Dove followed 1 minute later. Releases: in between 8.17 and 8.23 a.m. we have released 5 Pigeons from the pigeon-cage in The Keep. Two of those had colored foot-rings, so were ex-patients. The other three were born over there out of disabled parents. The announced SWIFT we had in our hands at 9.58 a.m. > see over there. With the green juvenile Dark Barn Owl its not like we should prefer > he is separating himself from the others and the wing-tops are constantly covered with droppings !! We received quite a lot of visitors today: 2 Dutchmen and 4 people from Portland (Oregon-USA); the 2 adults were both Vets: one with an own practice for pets and the other was working in a really huge Wildlife Hospital over there. At 1.19 p.m. a phone-call from Skála Kallonís that someone over there had since last evening a Mallard, which shouldnt be able to fly > so see at MALLARD. In at midday the thermometer reached above 30° Celsius !! And because in our opinion there was nothing wrong with that Mallard, and she constantly tried to escape through the netting of the cage, we have decided to a Release: at 7.48 p.m. is released at the Salines the this afternoon taken-in Mallard > we never have seen a bird flying-away so quickly > it looked like if she almost had missed an appointment . . . . !! Total amount of visitors this month: 075 (total this year: 729) Kinds of animals who are mentioned like this were for the first time in treatment in the L.W.H. Amount of kilometers (Animal-Ambulance) for bringing-in/releasing animals this month 27 (total this year 0624 kilometers) Total amount of intakes this month: 57 [wild ones: 55; others 02], (total this year 140: wild ones 102, others 034; total since the start of registration in 1996: 4187) of which: HOUSE SPARROW (Passer domesticus): 11; the first 2 were juveniles from Krátigos. Received purple and yellow ring right leg (see as well June 18th & 19th). The 3rd was a lot smaller than the first two and came from Mytiléne. Was found by children in the streets and they had . . . . played with the little one !! Later in was dumped in a flower-pot and removed from there by the owner of the flowers. Via Myrsíni Tourvalí it came here. Little hemorrhage right side of the crop. Received double red ring. Number 4 came from Kallonís and was as well very juvenile > received double silver ring. Number 5 was again a quite small juvenile and came from our village. If it will make it (arrived quite rumpled here) will receive a double yellow ring. And after two hours together with two other little ones in the same nest, we indeed could ring (see as well June 17th). Number 6 came from Mytiléne, was juvenile and received a double green ring (see as well June 28th). The 7th came from Skála Eressoú and as well juvenile. Received doubleblue. Number 8 was discovered in the Agorá in Mytiléne and (of course) juvenile. Received doubleblack (see as well June 24th). The 9th came from Kallonís and was of course juvenile. Received yellow-left and black-right.(see as well June 20th). Number 10 came again from our village and was quite small indeed. So for the time being no ring was given > first wait and see if it will be still alive tomorrow (see as well June 28th). The 11th was a bit bigger than number 10 and came from Mytiléne. Received silver-right and orange-left. GREAT TIT (Parus major): 1 juvenile from Mytiléne. Is missing all the tail feathers and one of the wings is hanging a bit > reason ?? (see as well June 4th). LITTLE OWL (Athene noctua indigena): 2; the first was a big juvenile; had hatched already. Big flight-feathers of the wings still partly in the plastic. Was discovered alongside a road in Mytiléne and taken to Kallonís > so observation.
Body-weight was 151 gram. Received green ring right foot. The 2nd was discovered by quite an elderly woman in Kallonís and she brought the bird to our car in . . . . a small tight plastic bag !! Ilia has had the bird the whole way back in his hands !! Received orange ring right foot.
Because there is a minor wing-injury (and so the chance of a cat-bite cant be excluded) we started prophylactically with injecting 3 days Lincospectin. MOORHEN (Gallinula chloropus) 1 very small juvenile (only 2 3 days old); was discovered June 3rd late in the evening close to the Shell-Station. Body-weight was 35 gram.
(see as well June 26th). LONG-LEGGED BUZZARD (Buteo rufinus): 2 nestlings; discovered completely drowned somewhere in our village. Fallen down due to thunderstorm or nest destroyed by thunderstorm ?? The red one was 608 gram and the purple one 750 gram. First placed under the red light to dry a bit.
(see as well June 5th). Were first booked as BUZZARDS, because due to the wet feathers the color couldnt be seen well. (see as well June 10th). GREENFINCH (Chloris chloris): 2 juveniles from Thermís. Should can be the European Serin as well, but Greenfinch is after all the most fitting. We hope time will teach us. Received silver and black ring left foot.
(See as well June 9th & 11th). EASTERN HEDGEHOG (Erinaceus concolor roum.): 2; the first was a too small specimen from Kallonís or the neighborhood over there. Was at intake only 127 gram, and this is for the condition of the needles (= age of the little one) much to light. Injuries couldnt be detected on the first sight, although the left front paw doesnt seem completely OK (thick, red and wet) > lets have a look if we can figure out whats exactly wrong.
The 2nd came from Mytiléne and had about the seize of number 1 when he arrived. Body-weight however was 187 gram. Held the legs stretched in a strange manner and the head bended backwards. Cerebral ?? Prophylactic antibiotics were injected. Some ticks could be removed. Had some injuries on the head > bite-injuries ?? Its a female we could see.
(see as well June 24th). SWIFT (Apus apus): 11; he first was a juvenile from Palaiókipos > so trying to rear. The 2nd was even smaller than nr 1 > is eating like a lion. Came via Mytiléne, but from where ?? Received green ring right. Number 3 came from our village, was a juvenile and had been held in a way to cause a luxation or both shoulder-joint. Received black ring right. The 4th came from Kallonís and was badly diminished. Was eating well. Got red ring right. Number 5 came from Mytiléne and was as well juvenile as soaking wet > people are placing complete swimming pools in the transport-box. And smelling a plastic bag, as well present in the box, one had tried feeding coconut fiber . . . . !! Received orange ring right (see as well June 19th). The 6th came as well from Mytiléne, was juvenile and quite big. Got yellow ring right (see as well June 19th). Number 7 came from our village and was as well juvenile. Received purple ring right (see as well June 17th). Number 8 came as well from our village and got a green ring left (see as well June 17th). The 9th came again from our village, was juvenile and had the same discoverer as number 3. Got green ring left (see as well June 19th). Number 10 was no juvenile and came from Kallonís. Observation why he/she was discovered on the ground. Received orange ring right. Was released the intake-day around 4 p.m. quite well > was flying like a Spitfire !! The 11th was an (almost) adult one and most probably had hit the ground due to hard winds. Will be released as soon as the weather allows. COLLARED DOVE (Streptopelia decaocto): 1 juvenile from our village (Agorá). Was discovered in the streets and could (because of the missing of several feathers) be caught by a cat. Prophylactically antibiotics were injected. Had at intake a good filled crop. DOG FOX (Vulpes vulpes): 1 quite young cub (milk-eye-teeth were still present), delivered via the Animal-lovers Society Kivotós. Was a complete collection of ticks with on some spots still pieces of fox visible > as much as possible they were removed. Pussy bite-injury on top-side of the nose > the corresponding injury under the lower jaw had closed meanwhile. Right under eye-tooth was half-way out with as well a loose piece of bone > had te be removed. Open fracture right Tibia > penetrating piece of bone had to be removed before reposition was possible. Doing so a muzzle had to be used, because mister used his teeth on our under-arm. Fracture was splinted.
Till late in the evening we had work removing ticks. But meanwhile he has eaten by himself !! (see as well June 14th and following days). PIGEON (Columba livia dom): 4; the first was a juvenile from/via Mytiléne. Quite pecked by other pigeons, but injuries are minimal. Received silver ring left. Was at intake 147 gram. The 2nd came from the pigeon-cage in The Keep and was severe injured on the head. Injuries sprayed with Hansaplast-bandage-spray (see as well June 12th). Number 3 came as well from the pigeon-cage in The Keep and was rescued half-drowned from the bath over there. Seems to have swallowed quite a lot of water > so wait and see till tomorrow (see as well June 13th). The 4th was discovered two days after hatching in the pigeon-cage in The Keep > severe pecked on the head > was one hard bloody clog. So trying to rescue this one as well. The brother/sister by the way was (still) OK. STRIPE-NECKED TERRAPIN (Mauremys rivulata): 1 baby from this year; already discovered some days before somewhere in or in the neighborhood of Ágia Paraskeví. Was hardly fed in a good way (those creatures are carnivores and no cows !!). Was at intake 8 gram !! So a release as soon as possible (see as well June 12th).
TOM-CAT (Felis catus): 2; the first was a very old, already deaf specimen from our village and had Tjarda as owner: Kummel. Came first in after a light TIA, of which the paralyze-symptoms were fading away already. Came back some hours afterwards > was pulmonal complete overfilled. Because the prognosis now really could be named infaust, the introduction-injection was given. Hereafter came a severe insult and suddenly everything stopped . . . . Number 2 came from Pétra and had an immense gangrene in between the tail and the anus; but this could only be seen after he was flattened > was quite wild and was biting like hell. Here as well the prognosis was infaust and so he was put down. After his death we could see that the gangrene had already passed the pelvis . . . . !!
HOUSE MARTIN (Delichon urbicum): 5 juveniles, of which the first from our village, discovered close to the Town Hall. So trying to rear it (see as well June 19th). The next four came from Mytiléne and were almost ready to leave the nest. Nest was by accident destroyed by the inhabitant of the house when a shutter was opened too far. Received the ring-colors orange, yellow, blue and green (see as well June 24th). ROCK DOVE (Columba livia): 1 adult from Mytiléne. Right wing is fractured and complete damaged just before the wrist-joint > hanging part was dead and couldnt be saved. So an amputation two hours after intake followed. YELLOW-LEGGED GULL (Larus michaellis): 3; the first was an adult from Paralía Thermís in a quite bad condition > the feathers are looking lousy !! A bit was fed (which was vomited at once) and lodged for the night in the cage for the terrapins (see as well June 28th and the days before). The 2nd came from Mytiléne and was an adult as well. The place where the bird was handed-over to us (the grave-yard in our village) was symbolic for its future. Had a smashed left wing (under-arm) and most of the ulna, the main bone, was missing. As well there was a torsion of 540°, so one time and a half turned around due to which the blood-circulation was gone. So prognosis infaust and put down.
Number 3 had been already for days in a bad condition on the beach in Mólivos; everyone could see it and no-one did something. Is a juvenile from this year, bone-thin and with a left eye in which a strange white bulb is present. As well severe pecked by other gulls on the back of the head. Prognosis absolutely isnt well at all. (see as well June 30th). LITTLE GREBE (Tachybaptus ruficollis): 1 adult (??), discovered close to the Shell-station. Trying to keep it alive and thereafter a release as soon as possible. Was at intake 141 gram.
(see as well June 17th). JACKDAW (Corvus monedula): 1 juvenile from/via Mytiléne. Was announced by the vet as a little black birdie which should grow a lot bigger, and of which species there are flying around here a lot. So there has been a mix up with the Hooded Crow (which indeed is a lot bigger), but which dont look like at all the same. This one has the seize for its kind. Body-weight at intake was 104 gram. (see as well June 24th). PALE BARN OWL (Tyto a. alba): 3 juveniles from Sikamínia. The 1st was at intake 309 gram. Seeing the spots on the breast its a female. Received purple/right and orange/left.
The next two were discovered by the same man and on the same spot > so most probably related to number 1. Received purple/right and red/left & purple right and blue/left.
The first was 296 gram and the 2nd 318 gram. However, they were discovered already June 27th and all those time kept in a dirty cardboard-box in the full sun with only a piece of . . . . bread !! So a wonder they were still alive. In spite of the difference in between number 1 and 2 the latter is evidently older. COMMON SHELDUCK (Tadorna tadorna): 1 adult female, today discovered in the salines. Has an old (open) fracture of the left wing with a piece of bone coming out. Should have a surgery, only the bird should be pepped-up first a bit.
Came in with the head hanging and breathing very difficult. With lots of difficulties a little bit of food could be given. Already at 9.23 p.m. not alive anymore. June 25th a P.M. was performed: on the right side of the thorax some deep injuries, of which one was going till the keel on the sternum, but hadnt penetrated this. Inside: all organs nothing special, except from a strange deformation of the trachea, just above the bifurcation, left and right not the same seize. MALLARD (Anas platyrhynchos): 1 adult female, discovered the evening before intake in Skála Kallonís. Shouldnt be able to fly. The contrary was proven when we tried to take her out of the cardboard-box > so in any case observation (see as well June 30th).
